About Us

The Sarasota Music Teachers Association is an organization, founded in 1956, whose members are professional music teachers in our area. SMTA is affiliated with FSMTA and MTNA, with members from Sarasota and Manatee Counties, including the State College of Florida.     

Our local activities include the Ruth Deluca Memorial Original Composition Competition, Community Service Awards Competition, Margaret E. Allan Memorial Camp and Scholarship Auditions, and Student Day.

SMTA continues to be a viable influence in the music teaching community.  It holds  monthly meetings at various locations, with a variety of programs to challenge, educate and entertain our members. We welcome new members, visitors and sponsors. Please join us!

History and organization

Music Teachers National Association was founded in 1876 by Theodore Presser and sixty-two colleagues in Delaware, Ohio. The mission of the Music Teachers National Association is to advance the value of music study and music making to society and to support the professionalism of music and its programs. Its activities include:
  • National Conference; and 
  • National Competitions of Division Winners

MTNA is comprised of 50 state affiliates grouped into seven divisions with more than 500 affiliates. The divisions are as follows:
  • Eastern
  • East Central
  • Northwest
  • Southern
  • Southwest
  • South Central 
  • West Central

The Southern Regional Division of MTNA includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.  Activities for this division include:
  • Regional Competitions of State Winners

Florida State Music Teachers Association is the state organization of MTNA. Its activities include:
  • State Conference
                   MTNA Junior Performance Competitions
                   MTNA Senior Performance Competitions
                   MTNA Young Artists Performance Competitions
                   MTNA Chamber Music Performance Competitions
                   MTNA Student Composition Competitions
  • State Competitive Events:
                   State Concerto Competition of District Winners
                   Byrd Memorial Piano Ensemble Competition
                   Gray Perry Young Collegiate Piano Award Competition

District 8 of Florida State Music Teachers Association is also associated with MTNA, and includes Desoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee and Sarasota Counties.  Its activities include:
  • District Concerto Competition, where the winners in 3 age levels progress to State Competitive Events.
